Website Analysis; Regina Spektor

Images and Logo
How is your band/artist represented?
On the opening page for Regina Spektors official website, there are no images or logos. There are, however, simplistic 'swirls' around certain things; such as 'Enter site' and a live video footage in the centre of the page. This instantly shows us how Regina likes to keep things simple, and isn't about the fancy artwork.

Genre
How are generic conventions of the music used?

The simple theme, colours and layout of Reginas site link to the genre of 'anti-folk' exceptionally. Within this genre we expect to see plain, simple colours, with simple and clear text with easy to use links. Throughout the website there is the running theme of the plain colours with the main page (after clicking 'Enter Site') having torn, scrappy looking notebook paper (just like we saw throughout Kimya Dawsons), videos and pictures (some of Regina herself) creating a very artistic collage, using stickytape to seal the image to the page. The collage effect doesn't fill the entire screen, only the centre; again giving us the simple and laid back approach.

New Technology
How does your artist use media technology for promotion?

Unlike Kimya Dawsons website, on Regina Spektors we have links to her official Facebook and MySpace pages; there are also many embeded YouTube videos amongst each page - both her live and official videos - there is also the chance to sign up to recieve email updates from her, about upcoming tours and albums. This shows us that she is aware of the change in time, and likes to have close contact to her fans. Within the centre collage image, we see the cover of her latest album, obviously advertising her work amongst the other images.
Colour and Style
What does the overall colour and style say about your artist?
The basic use of colour, simple texts/links and use of notebook paper throughout the website allows us to see how down to earth and connected with the real world Regina is; the music videos and advertisements for her albums on each page also show us how important the music is to her, she isn't bothered about having special effects/fonts/colours, as long as the music is being appreciated properly.

Written Content
How does the written style reinforce the artist's image/genre?
Words such as 'adventures' reinforce the creative streak in which Regina often shows us in her videos; we also see the word 'exclusive' repeated a lot throughout the website, which indicates to us that she likes to treat her devoted fans to some unseen footage, unpublicised (else where than the website) events and album release dates. All of which tell us how much her fans mean to her and how important their love is.

Font and Layout
How do they construct the artist's image?

On the opening page of Regina Spektor's website the font is quite long and thin, with a more formal appearance (completely contrasting to the hand written titles we saw on Kimya Dawson's page) this indicates to us that although Regina is down to earth and thinks of her fans first, she also likes to have a bit of class (we can also see this slightly in the dresses she performes in). However, when delving deeper into the site, we do see one or two hand written titles, and an almost 'type-writter' sort of font; being easy to read and nothing too strenuous.

Target Audience
What techniques are used to target the audience?

Regina likes to have close contact with her fans, we see this easily from her website from the amount of advertising f her music, 'exclusive' events/releases and 'every-day' notesheet fonts/paper. The fact that she also has links straight to her official Facebook and MySpace pages also shows us that she is aware that her target audience (older teenagers to late twenties; 18-26) use social networking sites often and so is a good way to promote her music.

Advertisements
Are the advertisements suitable for the target audience?
As said previously, there are many advertisements amongst Regina's website, from pictures of the latest album cover, album downloads to live performance dates. The advertisements suit the target audience very well as she is obviously aware that nowadays the majority of 18-26 year olds download albums now rather than buying hard copies (compact discs).
